[Ukfreebsd] FYI: current cvsup.uk.freebsd.org to be phased out; use svn/freebsd-update/portsnap :-)

Dear all:

The University of Cambridge Computing Service is relocating to a new building in West Cambridge over the coming months (in fact, the old Microsoft Research building just behind the Computer Laboratory where I'm based), as well as a new data centre.

Tony and I are therefore faced with a decision about whether to continue operation of the current cvsup.uk.freebsd.org ("sesame") or not. Given that the FreeBSD Project is rapidly de-emphasising the use of cvsup in preference to svn, freebsd-update, and portsnap, the current view is that we will decommission the box when the move takes place (in a few months).

Hopefully, many of you have already transitioned to the newer (faster, more secure, and more feature-rich) distribution models. If not, please consider this a good time to think about doing so; as I recall, cvsup distribution of ports updates will be discontinued in a month or so anyway!

(It might make sense for us to point the current cvsup.uk.freebsd.org CNAME elsewhere ... but maybe not. There will be new UK-based FreeBSD.org infrastructure being brought up over the coming months anyway, but presumably not to include a new cvsup mirror -- rather, package distribution, svn mirror, etc.)

Robert
