ports has openssh-portable. I initially just installed that assuming it might depend on a particular and newish version of openssl which it would grab. But it used the old system ones.

So I installed a new openssl first and then openssh-portable built against that new versions. I'm sorted now but not for the first time found the answer just after mailing to ask you lot.
