[Ukfreebsd] usb printing

Hi - good to have the list again, anyone clued-up on usb printers and
I can see - dmesg - my feak and weeble inkjet HP3940 as either ulpt or
but it won't even respond to, eg # cat test.txt > /dev/ulpt0
lp says 'unknown printer'
cups (plus hplip) will register it, but loses the ppd after I've set it
in devfs it's owned by operator with 0660
Many thanks for any ideas of what I might try to resolve this
