I ran Dragonfly for a while and was very impressed with it.

Originally a fork of FreeBSD 4.x it now has a number of interesting
technical features like virtual kernels and, as you say, the Hammer
file system.

The community is small and it's pretty much a one man band but the use
of pkgsrc means there are most of the usual applications available.

It works well under qemm if you want to try it under emulation.
