1&1 are definitely a German company, however they have expanded into the
UK.

"1&1 Internet Ltd is the UK arm of 1&1 Internet AG based in Germany (a
subsidiary of United Internet Group, a public company with a market cap
of more than 2 Billion GBP)."

In general, 1&1 aim for a mass production effort so your customer
service
expectations should be in line with that.

For mail I can suggest

* fastmail (Australian company with servers here and there) or
* APM internet (UK company, ex Nildram )
* http://www.simplymailsolutions.com/  (ex-UNET directors)
* Google Apps

We at Exonetric also provide mail service including IMAP (on a
FreeBSD platform)
