5.4 Server lockups

Hello
I have a server running 5.4-RELEASE (its about 2 years old and was
running fine until a few days ago) =20
It runs ok for about 12 hours or so then locks up=20
It usually still responds to pings but connections to listening daemons
(ssh and http) fail
If I try to login at the console I either find the server frozen or I
can enter a username but then get no password prompt and have to resort
to a power cycle
I never see any hardware errors in the logs
I'm begining to suspect the failure is conincidental with disc access or
possibly with accessing one of two smbfs mounts but there's nothing to
support either possibility in the logs
To establish whether it could be a disk problem I've tried running
smartctl but the status always comes back OK although there are a lot of
ECC Fast corrected errors (though all the posts I've read suggest this
is not a concern)
I've moved the important functions to a backup server and will probably
rebuild (installing 6.1) but I'd like to know if it really is a hardware
problem?=20
Any thoughts appreciated
