Hi Alan
=20
The smtp.ntlworld.com mailserver has always accepted email sent out =
using perl scripts from my MS Windows machine on the same LAN, not =
necessarily with a 'From ' address corresponding to a currently valid =
ntl email account.=20
=20
My broadband ISP 'adsl4less' (through which all 'net traffic normally =
goes, unless I dial into the ntl account for testing purposes to see =
what an outside user sees connecting to a website hosted from here) =
seems more pernickety about mail going through their smtp. Also I'd =
rather use a mail routing scheme which didn't risk getting their =
advertising puff tacked on the bottom of everything. Apart from anything =
else, I pay them more than that for my broadband! - premium for the =
fixed IP and a MegaBit per second on downloads I guess.
=20
How would I hack (for the time being) the sendmail.cf file to set a =
different 'From ' email address?
=20
Best

it could be your ISP (ntlworld.com) is accepting the mail, but dropping =
it (silently) due to several anti-spam checks.
I've had email dropped if the From: or envelope from was an invalid =
(syntax) or unknown domain. Try setting your
>From address to charles-brewster at ntlworld.com and see if that works.

'mailq -v' gives: /var/spool/mqueue is empty

'sendmail -vq' gives: sendmail: option requires an argument -q

string /var/spool/mqueue )

The sendmail daemon is started from rc.conf with the lines:
=20
sendmail_enable=3D"YES"
sendmail_flags=3D"-bd -q30m"
=20
Looking through the above, I'll try changing the outgoing mail "smart =
host" setting to 'smtp.ntlworld.com' (my other ISP mail account) as I =
have that working fine for emails sent out from perl scripts on my MS =
Windows machine on the same LAN.
=20
Any further suggestions you might have would be much appreciated.
=20

is there something in the outbound queue (try mailq -v)?
Try processing the outbound queue (runq or sendmail -vq).
what's in the mail log (/var/log/maillog)?
is the daemon started with -bd -q10m (process outbound queue every 10 =
minutes)?

Hello again
=20
Using FreeBSD 5.3 I've got sendmail-8.13.5 up and running as a daemon =
and am able to use the shell prompt to send email to myself on the local =
machine as root using commands like:
/usr/sbin/sendmail -v root <sendstuff
where sendstuff is a text file with a test message.
=20
It works also if I send to root at euclid.edcv where 'euclid' is the name =
of the box on the network and 'edcv' is the local domain name for my =
LAN.
=20
If I try to send the same message to the outside world, say to =
charles-brewster at ntlworld.com , it looks as if sendmail is sending out, =
but nothing is arriving. The '-v' output is as follows:
=20

=20
It looks to me as if sendmail is passing on the message to the local =
machine but that it is not getting any further.
=20
I've got this far by editing /etc/mail/sendmail.cf directly by hand, =
since I can't get 'Build -c' to work.
=20
I've tried with and without a value after the DS in these sendmail.cf =
lines

=20
I've got the sendmail source files unpacked in =
/root/install_software/sendmail/sendmail-8.13.5 and I'm running Build =
from that directory logged in as root.
=20
When I try to create sendmail.cf using a .mc file copied to =
/devtools/Site/site.config.m4 (just the standard FreeBSD offering from =
the distro with a couple of edits to properly generate the changes =
hacked into sendmail.cf) it throws up errors on the console beginning as =

Can anyone who is used to looking at these files spot anything =

setting/changing to get it to work?
=20
Does anybody have a sendmail m4 file for FreeBSD 5.3 which =
works/compiles which they would be prepared to share for me to try to =
modify? Any pointers to something suitable online?
=20
Needs are simple (I think) - to send/receive email across the LAN and =
to/from the outside world. For external email I have two ISP mail =
accounts which will accept smtp. I also have a couple of internet domain =
MX records pointing to my IP address and would like to use these to set =
up and service email addresses on those domains, but not necessarily =
immediately.
=20
Apologies for -v mode.
Many thanks for any help.
