Actually, it seems that, on Debian at least, you can:

	{bifrost}-{~} % ls /vmware=20
	xp
	{bifrost}-{~} % ls /vmware -l
	total 1
	drwx------  2 ceri desk 808 2006-07-11 11:10 xp

I don't think I like it, but it works.
