Confusion over setting locales

I've set the following in /etc/login.conf:

     default:\
         :charset=ISO-8859-15:\
         :lang=en_GB.ISO8859-15:\
         ...

In pico and vi, the $, £ and # symbols appear correctly (and from the
correct keys!) but I can't get a € (euro) symbol when I type CTR+ALT+4.

In addition, when using the bash shell, when I try to type a £ (GBP
symbol), it gives a # symbol *and* a new line.

Can anyone tell me where I am going wrong please?

Thanks,
Steve :)
