DNS issues

I am fairly stumped and hope someone can shed some light...

FreeBSD 5.3-RELEASE on a laptop.  Plugged into a DLINK home firewall,
which is plugged into another DLINK home firewall, which is connected to
an ISP.  I get no DNS responses with nslookup or dig, but when I sniff the
traffic I see the responses arriving.  There are no ipfw lists or other
filters involved.  Lastly, when plugged into the outer DLINK everything
works fine. Relevant info:
