I think you'll find that this is a re-branded Web Excel modem and if I'm
right it was a bag of cr*p under windows.
To the best of my knowledge they are dead and gone, sorry.

Kevin

Subject: Still playing USB Modem fun and games

Hello - Happy New Year

Many thanks Brian and Mike for your helpful observations and suggestions.

Mike - I tried the kldload sequence you suggested (but without rebuilding
the kernel which has "ucom" and "umodem" compiled in) having started the box
up with the modem unplugged.

kldload umct
kldload uplcom
kldload ubsa
executed fine as expected, and
kldload umodem
generated an error saying the file was already present, also as expected.

Plugging the modem in: it is recognised immediately, but as a ugen - see
dmesg | tail o/p:

While the modem was connected I got the following output from "usbdevs -d

And the following from "kldstat":
--

 5 1 0xffffffffa7c07000 ff7 ubsa.ko
--

The "dragon_saver" wasn't working anyway and threw up errors during bootup,
so I set screensaver to "none" with sysinstall, rebooted and tried all
again, just in case that was upsetting it somehow, but no further joy.

I'm wondering if the USB Modem itself is of the type supported by "umodem" -
I note on the man page that it says
"Only modems with multiplexed commands and data are supported at the
moment."

The beast in question is v34/v90/v92 branded "PC Line" model PCL-MD200 which
shipped with next to no documentation, just a CD from "SuperVoice" with
generic drivers for the various flavours of MS Windows. I can try to dig
around for a spec on the 'net and see if it does in fact do multiplexed
commands and data.

For what it's worth, I also can't get the modem working with Linux (Suse 9.1
on a different replaceable hard drive) on the same AMD64 box, and newsgroup
references don't offer much help there either.

For legacy printer support, I have to say I'm looking away from the idea of
a USB->Parallel Port convertor, and I'm keen to equip the box with
conventional serial and parallel ports. The ABIT KV8-MAX3 motherboard has no
ISA slots, and a PCI serial/parallel card will probably have to wait until
the month-end

A propos discussions on what topics might be included in a FreeBSD
conference this year - I'd much like something of a primer session on
writing drivers - even if it was just pointers to the best places to start
in the online documentation and/or the published literature.

Many thanks for all your help - any further suggestions are much appreciated
of course.

All good things for 2005

Regards
Charles B

PS - with earlier versions of FreebSD I used to be able to switch between
alternate TTYs with ALT+F1, ALT+F2 etc, but that doesn't seem to work with
this installation - has the KB shortcut changed? - or might the new-fangled
"multimedia" KB I'm using not be generating the correct codes for ALT+Fx
keystrokes? Any easy way I can check this?
