I blew away the ListenAddress line for that ip in httpd.conf & that
seems to have solved that error message.

I changed my vhost declaration too:

NameVirtualHost *:80

<VirtualHost *:80>
    ServerAdmin frank at esperance-linux.co.uk
    DocumentRoot /usr/local/www/data-dist/frank
    ServerName www.esperance-linux.co.uk
    ErrorLog /var/log/esperance-linux.co.uk-error_log
</VirtualHost>

restarted the server...

$ sockstat -l4 | grep http

www      httpd    37692   18 tcp4   *:80                  *:*
www      httpd    37581   18 tcp4   *:80                  *:*
www      httpd    37580   18 tcp4   *:80                  *:*
www      httpd    37579   18 tcp4   *:80                  *:*
www      httpd    37578   18 tcp4   *:80                  *:*

root     httpd    36874   18 tcp4   *:80                  *:*

# httpd -S

VirtualHost configuration:
wildcard NameVirtualHosts and _default_ servers:
*:80                   is a NameVirtualHost
                       default server www.esperance-linux.co.uk (/usr/local/etc/apache/httpd.conf:1103)
                       port 80 namevhost www.esperance-linux.co.uk (/usr/local/etc/apache/httpd.conf:1103)

It all looks fairly acceptable to my untutored eye. Apache dishes up
pages for me locally but not to folks on the 'net.

BTW,

$ uname -srp

FreeBSD 4.11-RELEASE-p4 i386
