Should I update/updgrade/stay?

I can't get to grips with mergemaster so I use my editor (vim) and
check diffs by hand. It's a rather tedious business but it gets the
job done and it's an option.

I think this might be documented in the handbook. So is the advice to
save a dated /etc tree which I follow; although <touch wood> I've
never needed it.

>From what I've found, if you follow the handbook then you shouldn't go
too badly wrong with the make world/kernel business. Although the
initial prospect can seem a bit terrifying to a newbie.
