As well as making sure it catches plain eicar, you should probably also
check that various mechanisms for encoding eicar are detected. This
isn't so much of a problem if the only mail client you're running is on
FreeBSD, but if you've got any Windows users on your network, it's
important to protect them as well.
http://www.testvirus.org/
will send eicar.com to your e-mail address obscured in a number of
interesting ways, allowing you to make sure that your AV detection setup
is working properly.
