Equally could be the power supply on the motherboard which is obviously 
now under less load.

Does the motherboard by any chance have electrolytic capacitors with 
curved metal caps (which should be flat) ? They're the cylindrical 
components which might be black with gold writing and near the CPU. There 
was a spate of motherboards built with duff ones a few years ago.
