Nope. XP-Pro is perfectly happy to never see a PDC.

I've got 3 XPPro machines talking to two FreeBSD/Samba machines, and no PDC
to be seen anywhere. I just match up the passwords using smbpasswd on the
BSD machines.

encrypt_passwords = Yes

is probably the key part of smb.conf .
