Just a small point here you have created two alias IP addresses not a "real"
address and an alias I think what you intend is
ifconfig fxp0 = "inet 172.16.1.185 netmask 255.255.0.0"
ifconfig fxp0_alias0 = "inet 172.16.1.186 netmask 255.255.255.255"
but the important bit is that the alias or aliases should except in special
cases have 255.255.255.255 as a mask when bound to the same subnet
