It's hard to tell what you need without any errors to go on...  It's
probably worth having a look at /var/log/XFree86.* too see if there's
anything in there that gives a hint.

You might also want to try running:

XFree86 --configure

This causes XFree to generate a sort of guessed config, which you
might find gets a basic config that works, you can then customise it
to meet your needs.
