Thanks for that - I think it was related.

I didn't change a thing - but I got a
jeeves kernel log messages:

>> Timecounter "TSC"  frequency 199739998 Hz
>> CPU: Pentium Pro (199.74-MHz 686-class CPU)
in todays "security run output" mail - which I don't think I've seen before.

Hey presto - the daemon is now working !!

The worlds first self healing binary ??
