color highlighting in vi/vim in a *term

Is your $TERM environment variable is set to 'xterm-color'?:

[0:11:13] munk at users /home/munk# echo $TERM
xterm-color

You may also want to set this in your ~/.vimrc file as well:

set background=dark

otherwise syntax highlighting may not be easily readable in vim.
