named doesn't maintain an open descriptor on each zone file. It reads
them all into memory and then ignore s the disk files until told to
reload:

    happy-idiot-talk:~/src/namedb/scripts:% fstat -p 97
USER CMD PID FD MOUNT INUM MODE SZ|DV R/W
    bind named 97 root /var 15888 drwxr-xr-x 512 r
    bind named 97 wd /var 15951 drwxr-xr-x 512 r
    bind named 97 text /usr 627244 -r-xr-xr-x 1181332 r
    bind named 97 0 /var 15938 crw-rw-rw- null rw
    bind named 97 1 /var 15938 crw-rw-rw- null rw
    bind named 97 2 /var 15938 crw-rw-rw- null rw
    bind     named         97    3* local dgram d6e66e60 <-> d6e65f00
bind named 97 4* internet dgram udp d5acfe00
bind named 97 5* internet stream tcp d5c4ee80
bind named 97 6* internet dgram udp d5acfd40
bind named 97 7* internet stream tcp d5c4ec60
bind named 97 8* internet dgram udp d5acfc80
    bind named 97 9* internet6 dgram udp d5acfbc0
bind named 97 10* internet stream tcp d5c4ea40
    bind named 97 11 /var 15939 crw-r--r-- random r

So the number of available descriptors shouldn't limit the number of
zones you can serve.
