Notebook AND freebsd

Hi there =) i'm a new FreeBsd user and after having a server running
succesfully for 1 month straight i decided to move from win to freebsd on my
notebook too..

everything works fine.. kde3 is up and kicking butts BUT
when i reboot or shutdown the box it goes in a "soft of standy" and i have
to shutdown it manually...

the apm is on (don't even know if that is what i need... at least not for
shutting down i think)...

Any suggestion ?
