screen offset

Hello,
	At my small, old monitor's maximum resolution of 1024x768 the image is 
offset several centimetres to the right, so that the left side of the screen 
is blank, and the desktop is folded over itself on the right. Is there a 
simple way to correct this, perhaps by editing XF86Config, or is there 
perhaps a utility which will sort it out? It's very annoying, as it means I 
must continually fiddle with my monitor's alignment knobs whenever I go from 
ttyv0-7 to ttyv8 and back again.
