installing php as a standalone/cgi

how do you install php as a standalone/cgi?  Is it just a case of installing
it as usual i.e as per the php.net pasge with apache and then adding
something like the following to the httpd.conf file?:-

Action application/x-httpd-php-external "/php/bin/php"

<Directory /hsphere/shared/apache/php/bin>
Options +ExecCGI
</Directory>

ScriptAlias /php/bin/ /hsphere/shared/apache/php/bin/
