I think you need to de-install the existing package before installing the
updated one. This can get irksome when other installed packages have
run-time dependencies on the package that you want to upgrade.
I say "I think" 'cos I don't bother meddling with that sort of thing
manually any more: see /usr/ports/sysutils/portupgrade for a really nifty
set of utilities which help with this sort of thing.
