Redirecting stderr

I'm a complete newbie to FreeBSD (and Unix in general), and was =
wandering

1. how I could redirect StdErr output of startx (& xinit) into a file?
2. how can I set up my modem (on COM4, I was hoping to use =
/stand/sysinstall,
but that only supports COM1 it seems...)?
3. Is there a program like GetRight, which allows you to resume =
downloads from
previous sessions?
