kernel install problem

I'm having a problem with installing my newly built kernel....

running 'make installkernel KERNCONF=KERNEL' runs ok, but exits with:

===> splash/bmp
install -c -o root -g wheel -m 555   splash_bmp.ko /boot/kernel/
===> splash/pcx
install -c -o root -g wheel -m 555   splash_pcx.ko /boot/kernel/
===> sr
install -c -o root -g wheel -m 555   if_sr.ko /boot/kernel/
===> streams
install -c -o root -g wheel -m 555   streams.ko /boot/kernel/
===> vesa
install -c -o root -g wheel -m 555   vesa.ko /boot/kernel/
===> wi
install -c -o root -g wheel -m 555   if_wi.ko /boot/kernel/
kldxref /boot/kernel
kldxref:No such file or directory
*** Error code 1 (ignored)

I can't see anything wrong... /boot/kernel exists (as a directory), the
new kernel appears to be located there, but the installkernel process
does not install it in /

kldxref [1] exists:

guy at evolver $ find / -name kldx\*

[1] No idea what it is/does though...

I'm running 4.3-RELEASE ATM, and am using 4.X-STABLE sources.

Any clues??
