Thanks for the responses. I'll have a look round keeping all that in 
mind. I'm not a quality fanatic, I probably wouldn't be able to tell 
between a medium quality and very high quality image, ... I can't 
with HiFi equipment.

FreeBSD has support for CompactFlash/SmartMedia readers under the 
umass driver IIRC (?) so I'll also see what sort of prices they 
retail for. My ideal situation would be a box<-usb->camera connection 
but that would probably require me to boot up the ole' Win2K box - 
which is a pain.

Thanks for the helpful comments, I'll report back any successes / 
failures.
