Setting up SoundBlaster 16 PCI under FreeBSD 4.3

I am running FreeBSD 4.3-RELEASE and am in the process of trying to set
up my system to recognise my SoundBlaster 16 PCI soundcard.

I have been following the instructions in the handbook about compiling a
new kernel to accommodate the soundcard.

I have made a new kernel with:
device pcm
included in the config file
(with no other, umm, attributes, to pcm specified).

sndstat contains the following:

dm at viewport% more /dev/sndstat
FreeBSD Audio Driver (newpcm) May 25 2001 22:29:02
Installed devices:
pcm0: <AudioPCI ES1371> at io 0xf700 irq 11 (1p/1r channels duplex)

I MAKEDEV'd snd0, and do have the following:
(I don't have an link entry for midi, as is the case for all the other
devices, is this a problem?)

lrwxrwxrwx  1 root  wheel         6 May 28 12:39 audio@ -> audio0
crw-rw-rw-  1 root  wheel   30,   4 May 28 12:39 audio0
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root  wheel         4 May 28 12:39 dsp@ -> dsp0
crw-rw-rw-  1 root  wheel   30,   3 May 28 12:39 dsp0
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root  wheel         5 May 28 12:39 dspW@ -> dspW0
crw-rw-rw-  1 root  wheel   30,   5 May 28 12:39 dspW0
crw-rw-rw-  1 root  wheel   30,   2 May 28 12:39 midi0
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root  wheel         6 May 28 12:39 mixer@ -> mixer0
crw-rw-rw-  1 root  wheel   30,   0 May 28 12:39 mixer0
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root  wheel         6 May 28 12:39 music@ -> music0
crw-rw-rw-  1 root  wheel   30,   8 May 28 12:39 music0
lrwxr-xr-x  1 root  wheel         5 Apr 21 18:07 psion@ -> cuaa1
crw-------  1 root  wheel   21,   1 May  5 13:38 psm0
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root  wheel         4 May 28 12:39 pss@ -> pss0
crw-rw-rw-  1 root  wheel   30,   9 May 28 12:39 pss0
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root  wheel        10 May 28 12:39 sequencer@ ->
sequencer0
crw-rw-rw-  1 root  wheel   30,   1 May 28 12:39 sequencer0

Now, I don't actually know whether my soundcard is working or not.
I don't know what audio software I have installed so I guess it might be
hard to test!

I do have mpeg_play installed, which always reported "Audio is not
played" when trying to play MPEG movies with sound before, and is still
seeming to do so.. :-(

I suppose the obvious thing to do would be to have a look in the audio
ports collection and download some WAVE file players (and some WAVE
files) for starters and take it from there, but I was just wondering
whether anybody could tell from this description whether it seems as I
have set up my system to recognise the soundcard correctly or not?

Thanks,

David.
