Hi,
Now it's a bit cooler and my brain is back on-line, I'd be happy to
organize/host a "BSD server for SME" mini-gathering with discussion,
info & ideas exchange, some beer, and whatever else comes naturally
along the lines:
- "Server/network functionality for SME" review:
(goals to achieve, requirements to be addressed -> server/network
functionality, scaleability potential, reliable local or remote
backup, no-downtime network operation etc)
- Implementation/maintenance cycle step-by-step review:
- advertising -> sales
- case studies -> quotation
- arranging 3rd party services (Internet connectivity etc)
- supplying required hardware & software
- re-cycling some existing equipment as required
- server installation, configuration, testing
- workstation installation, configuration, testing
- server/network documentation
- maintenance & support:
- remote telnet/ssh/ftp/dial-in/..
- server monitoring -> admin alert
- on-site troubleshooting & repairs
- support by phone & email
- online support/FAQ on web site
- some applicable users and admin training
- "Mission-critical" stuff review:
- tried & trusted backup & restore solutions
- "no-downtime" network operation solutions
- "State of the industry" review
- servers & network appliances
- various hardware & software
- industry-standard design/implementation levels
- BSD solutions, equipment, support & training providers in the UK
- FSL (FreeBSD Services Ltd): products/solutions/services review
- BSDI Europe/WindRiver: products/solutions/services review
- various "turnkey" and "bare-bone" solutions & equipment
- BSD training in the UK?
Address: 1 Loveridge Mews, London, NW6 3DP
(Kilburn tube station/Jubilee line, Brondesbury/BR)
Date/time: To be confirmed (Thursday/Friday this/next week 4pm-ish?)
Attendees: BSD UKUG folks interested in the subject
FSL (FreeBSD Services Limited) - Paul, Brian and others
BSDI Europe/WindRiver - Nik Clayton, ..?
Beware: Sadly, this IT market niche presents considerably more
various headaches than real technical challenges (based
on some experience).
Awaiting for your ideas/suggestions - but 1st let's decide on date/time.
Cheers,
Serge (mobile 07957 647193)
