If the drive is recognised at boot up then the battle's won.
If the tape will comfortably hold a complete level 0 backup then just
stick a call to dump(8) with the appropriate parameters in cron, and
remember to change the tapes each day.
If you need to get fancier (mixing in multiple levels of dumps, or you
want things like e-mail notification of backups, statistics, and so on)
then definitely investigate Amanda, in ports/misc/amanda24.
