Thank you for you help,

basically this problem is now fixed. I swapped my modem for a usr
sportster I have another PC. All I know is that it works now!

I can get a connection and all is well! until I start to download =
(fetch
with 'make') the file seems to download ok but I get messages ...
                      <date> <time> <host$> : si0 error ....
there is a little more to this message, but I cant remember it. Also I
checked my log on a download I set up with cron, the maximum transfer =
rate
was only 1.5 kbs. This download was scheduled about 5 am. My ISP is
usually very fast at this time in the morning.

I have checked about 12:30 am and windows downloads are fast and my Unix
downloads take about 1-2 hours to fetch 1 file (e.g. samba-2.0.7.tar =
took
1hr 20mins, I have downloaded this onto a floppy from a 98 PC)

Any suggestions???

Julian
