Having got your comment about the version of X being run I've upgraded to 4.1 ( I had just assumed that a clean install of FreeBSD 4.3 would have brought down the latest version of XFree86) and apart from the fact that it will only run in 16 colours at present XDM is working fine ( It's friday and it can wait for monday to fix it) Many thanks for the help Regards Kevin
