I've had ppp start up first thing in /etc/rc.local for so long
that I failed to notice this change from a static entry to a dynamic one.
very nice. Gosh the things you learn when you expose your ignorance.

Again i've had PCI devices for so long that I've not had to think about
the ISA bridging device and assumed that it behaved like the PCI cards.
So, yes, for these ISA cards the bridging device sbc is required as well
as pcm.

I vaguely recall that the Matsushita drives might have worked via the
old soundblaster driver so you've got potentially two hurdles to jump
there (i.e. wrong version of FreeBSD, wrong driver in this version).
I might be full of it, so I recommend checking the mail archives at
http://www.freebsd.org/search/search.html and searching for "CR562"
and Matsushita.
