xwd is "free" with X, so you don't need to get and compile anything:

michaelb at singsing:~$ grep xwd /var/db/pkg/*/+CONTENTS
/var/db/pkg/XFree86-4.0.1/+CONTENTS:bin/xwd
/var/db/pkg/XFree86-4.0.1/+CONTENTS:lib/X11/doc/html/xwd.1.html
/var/db/pkg/XFree86-4.0.1/+CONTENTS:man/man1/xwd.1.gz
/var/db/pkg/gimp-1.1.24/+CONTENTS:libexec/gimp/1.1/plug-ins/xwd
/var/db/pkg/gimp-1.1.24/+CONTENTS:share/gimp/help/C/filters/xwd.html
/var/db/pkg/netpbm-9.6/+CONTENTS:man/man1/pnmtoxwd.1.gz
/var/db/pkg/netpbm-9.6/+CONTENTS:man/man1/xwdtopnm.1.gz
/var/db/pkg/netpbm-9.6/+CONTENTS:bin/pnmtoxwd
/var/db/pkg/netpbm-9.6/+CONTENTS:bin/xwdtopnm

Oooohh! netpbm has conversion utilities for it, too. I didn't know that.
