smp and 4.1

Hi all

are there any kernel guru's out there?
i have just got a Dell poweredge 1300, Dual PIII 500 and 512gb ram.

i did a standard install and then copied generic kernel to mykernel and 
edited it so that all the smp options were unhashed

then ran make depend && make && make install and then rebooted when it 
was finished

yet on reboot you get a error "kernel panic, you must recompile your 
kernel"

Am i doing something wrong? are there any docs out there for smp kernel 
configs?
