Hmm, faulty hardware perhaps?  Or maybe a misconfiguration of some sort.
Is the ad1 drive correctly configured as a slave?  Perhaps you'd get
this sort of weirdness if they were both set as 'master' or something,
or if the cable is faulty.  (I'm assuming ad1 is the primary slave.)

What's the problem with configuring them?  You should be able to just do

ifconfig ed0 [foo]
ifconfig rl0 [foo]

Where [foo] is "inet 192.168.1.2" or something.  Doesn't that work?  If
not, what exact errors do you get?
